Cybersecurity Awareness Month Tip: Spotting a Phishing Email
How do you know if that email is legit?
Phishing remains one of the most common — and effective — cyber threats today. But how can you know if the email is legit?
Here’s what to look out for:
1. Suspicious sender: Check the sender’s email address carefully — a small typo or unfamiliar domain is often a giveaway.
2. Unexpected attachments or links: Hover over links before clicking. If the URL looks strange or unrelated to the message, don’t open it.
3. Urgent or alarming language: Phrases like “your account will be locked” or “act immediately” are designed to create panic and rush your judgment. Do not respond to a urgent email like this; contact your IT team.
4. Poor spelling and formatting: Legitimate organizations maintain professional standards — typos and odd layouts are red flags.
5. Requests for sensitive information: No reputable company will ask for passwords, PINs, or verification codes over email.
If something feels off, trust your instincts — don’t click, don’t reply, and report it to your IT or security team right away.
